David Teniers the Younger (Antwerp, December 15, 1610 – Brussels, April 25, 1690) was a painter and engraver, son of the painter David Teniers the Elder (or David Teniers I) and father of David Teniers III. He was a Flemish artist of great fame among his contemporaries thanks to his scenes of villagers and other common people (peasants, farmers, smokers), which allow him to be compared with Dutch masters such as Adriaen van Ostade, although he opted for a more refined manners. Another of his specialties was the painting monkeys, where he showed these animals performing human tasks; theme also known as “macacadas” and “monerías”, and called in Europe by the French term singeries.
